I've been thinking for a while about which photo to use for today, the last day of 2023. I knew it should be something more reserved because for me this day has a lot to do with inner reflection and gratitude. In the end I decided on this fly agaric, a very well-known symbol of good luck, at least in my home country.
Gratitude for what I was able to achieve this year, for what was given to me, for the things I was able to learn this year and for the opportunities that were opened to me.
And with that I have already reached you, my very valued loyal followers.
You have no idea how much you have enriched the past year for me. Sharing my pictures and my thoughts with so many people around the world has always been a great joy for me. But the greatest gift that I received was and is the response that I was able to experience from you.
To feel that my pictures and texts touch and inspire other people, people from so many different nations and with such different personalities, is the greatest thing I could have ever wished for as an artist.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your interest, your curiosity and the countless interesting and very motivating comments as well as for your openness and warmth. and wish you a good and happy transition into 2024.

As in real life, here in the photo, taken on mt. Carolafelsen in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, we are confronted in many ways with the end, with finitude itself.
On the one hand, there is the end from a spatial perspective (the end is in front of us and it goes quite far down), which we should always keep an eye on to protect our own health.
And there are also the moments that are so commonplace that we no longer notice them, like the end of the rain or the end of the day, which is just around the corner. Basically, they aren't anything special for anyone, because something like this happens quite regularly. But imagining that this day is irretrievably over and can never be experienced again (for all eternity) helps from time to time to reflect on what really matters. Everyone can decide for themselves what that means in detail.
And then, last but not least, it's the moments that really touch us. The end of a phase of life, a relationship or even the loss of a loved one.
This part, the hardest of all, is symbolized in the picture by this birch tree. Of course, I am aware that it can only be a symbol and can only be compared to a very limited extent with true loss in life.
Nevertheless, it hit me when I saw that this famous birch tree on mt. Carolafelsen, which has already filled so many of my photos with life, is now just a lifeless shell. I don't know when or why this happened, because in the summer two years ago, when I was here last, it still had a dense green crown.
And even though I deeply regret the loss, I know that every end is also a beginning. And this applies, even if we sometimes cannot see it, to the other categories mentioned.
