Seeing American White Pelicans is a real treat for me. I've only seen them from a distance several other times.

I saw two huge white birds cruising along in Bolsa Bay but I couldn't make out what they were. A smile spread across my face when I got closer and saw that they were white pelicans. I usually see browns along the coast in S. California and rarely see white pelicans. They winter along the coast, but breed inland. Unlike the brown pelicans who dive for their fish, the white pelicans scoop them up.

I usually can't get very close to American White Pelicans, but this one either didn't notice me or was unconcerned - perhaps it was because I was sitting.

This one is in breeding plumage as evidenced by their beak's flattened "horns."
