Commuter traffic was a bear on the 405 to San Joaquin Marsh, but being there in the quiet of the weekday was well worth the drive. As soon as I arrived, Avocets flew past me. They seemed to be in quite a rush to get to where ever they were going, and I had to rush to set my camera to get the shot.

or... just riding piggy-back. When I took this shot, which was at a distance, I really couldn't tell exactly what was going on. It's something I don't see everyday!

Tip #2 Shoot in the early morning or late afternoon for decent light.
(The tips are not hierarchical - just what comes to mind when I post a shot.)
I usually must drive to where I take my photographs of birds. So consequently, unless I get up very early, I miss the best light. For my photography class at Bolsa Chica, I had to get up at 4:45 to arrive there by 6:00. We would shoot in the early morning and then again in the late afternoon. When I compared photographs from the workshop to my previous shots taken in late morning or mid-day light, I really could see the difference good lighting makes.
