I usually see Osprey's high on their perches, but his one was standing in the water not far from where we launched our 22' dory. The photograph was taken hand holding a 300mm lens with extender from the boat.

The tides were right, so we took our 21 foot dory into the Back Bay Ecological Reserve in Newport Beach, CA. My husband rowed as I photographed - lucky me :)
All morning I had tried to capture terns in flight and thought I just did not have the talent it takes to focus on one as they fly so quickly. A windfall came my way when I captured this one with his breakfast in his beak! Notice its graceful tail.

Great Blue Herons are found year-round near the coast in Southern California and have an eclectic diet of primarily fish, but also invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and even small birds and mammals!
