Robins are found year-round in the United States. Robins found in the West are often paler than those in the East. They eat invertebrates as well as fruits. This photo was taken in Sequoia National Park on a camping trip.

This beautiful little bird is a juvenile green-tailed towhee coming into its adult plumage. Although Pipilo chlorurus, is the smallest towhee, it is one of the larger members of the "American sparrow" family Emberizidae. While camping in Sequoia National Park, we would see them hop about and quickly hide in the bushes.

Hand held - Canon 40D with 300mm lens.

My alarm rang at 4:45 AM Saturday morning so I could return to Los Angeles from Bishop before the anticipated afternoon onslaught of traffic. The 405 freeway, a major artery through Los Angeles was being closed for the weekend and bumper-to-bumper traffic was anticipated on all freeways throughout the LA basin. Crews needed to tear down half of the Mulholland Bridge in order to make room for a new carpool lane.

Everyone, including me, thought there would be gridlock, so radio reporters dubbed the weekend closure of the 405 freeway, "Carmageddon."

I had such major angst about the trek home that I left in the dark. Boy, am I glad I did. A spectacular full Moon set as the Eastern Sierra Nevada Range was bathed in the early morning light. I was elated that I was up early enough to see the show.

About Carmageddon: anyone who did not need to travel, stayed home, so my journey home was a breeze!
