A friend and I hiked up a fire-scarred valley in the North Cascades this week to find the trail obliterated -- fallen trees, crumbling soil, unstable rocks made the going difficult. Even in May the snow up higher was so soft that the travel wasn't much easier, but we got up into the high basin to camp. We woke up on the snowfield at 11:30 p.m. to shoot star photos and instead saw this.

Camera notes: I had debated whether to take my full-frame D850 on this trip or go lighter with a D5500 -- this was a long hard slog into this valley and up to this basin, and I wasn't sure I wanted to carry the extra weight. But I decided I wanted to use the bigger sensor, so I then compromised with the lenses, taking three older AF Nikkors: 28-105mm, 70-210mm and 20mm f2.8. I shot a bit of the aurora and Milky Way with the 20mm, but just wasn't happy with manually focusing it, so I put the 28-105mm on just to see. I was surprised that it was a bit easier to focus on the stars, but also that the sharpness at f4 was pretty good. But next time, I'll take the 20mm f1.8 and the Rokinon 14mm.

Un dels bunquers que formaven la linea L2 de defensa de Catalunya durant la guerra civil. Com la majoria d'aquesta linea, quasi no es va combatre aquí, ja que al gener del 39 quan les avançades feixistes hi arribaren, les forces republicanes ja anaven en retirada.

This is one of the bunkers of the republican L2 line that protected Catalonia from the fascist forces led by Franco. Eventualy all the L2 line, which was almost complete, was abandoned in january 1939 with the final fascist ofensive. In a way, the L2 line is our own Maginot line.
