One of the last downtown department stores in the country, Boscov's in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.- originally Fowler, Dick and Walker's Boston Store. Inset sketch shows the plaid facade used by The Boston Store, named for the Boston wholesalers which gave the trio credit to get started. Boscov's acquired the building in 1980 and it became a renewed hub for the struggling downtown. As a tribute to the former store, they allowed "The Boston Store Since 1879" part of the facade sign to remain. Mr. Boscov also spearheaded the renovation of the nearby former Paramont Theater into the Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, another drawing card for the area.
