This building was rather weird.

When we stayed in a cottage on holiday just before lockdown this was in the garden. And every morning we would wake up and the structure would have moved around in the night…

This was taken one moonlit evening in March just before lockdown.

It was one of those instances where monochrome works better than colour - the house lights illuminated the foreground sail with tungsten orange which looked really odd against the blue star-scaped sky. But that is great in the conversion because it means you can balance the front sail brightness against the rest just by tweaking a colour channel in the B&W adjustment.

For the Thursday Monochrome group and for my 100x monochrome project.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image! Happy Donnerstagsmonochrom (& 100x) :)

Local lane.

As a young impressionable boy, I was obliged to learn a poem by Alfred Noyes called The Highwayman at school. Here is the first verse in the ballad:

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

I guess it appealed to my boyish sensibilities as it’s a tale of illicit romance and bloody death.

But I still love the sound and lilt of the words, the cadence of vivid meanings. And I also blame it for my affection for alliteration that you see evidence of on Flickr, spattered through my titles as it is. Some, I realise, would call it my alliterative affliction ;)

Whenever I see a road shining in high contrast I think of the poem - a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor…

But this is a fraud - neither midnight nor a purple moor. It was taken shortly after midday on Tuesday on one of my walks. And that, I guess is the marvellous magical miracle of modern monochrome ;)

The roads around here never really dry out in winter, and this particular one always has a trickle of water running down it, amongst the mud. And I couldn’t resist the sinuous curve into nothing. Not much is in focus, but I think that is part of the point…

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday and 100x :)

Paeony.
This was taken almost a year ago in my garden.

I love the myriad shapes of paeony petals and I have discovered they look well in monochrome.

So here is another attempt, created entirely in Affinity Photo on the iPad. It's slightly split-toned.

I love the sense of falling light in this one...

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday :)

So today’s Idea to Try was notable in its unsophistication.

I’d noticed before that if you take a multiple-exposure within a short timeframe you’d end up with a blurry image… but not quite like a wobbly camera one.

The result is more like a stop-frame animation. And (so the thinking went) that can be interesting because you get more detail in the individual frames and a sharpness in the edges.

Yeah, well. This is attempt #1. Again I went for a subject with defined edges and high tonal contrast, so that we retained an inkling of what it was about.

This was taken a couple of months ago, about the same time the idea quantum mechanically popped into my brain (it remains a topic for research as to quite what happened to the anti-idea that must have been produced at the same time, but I digress).

Two other observations warrant a note. Firstly that it’s been a while since I have processed a black and white (it was my 100x last year) and I really quite enjoyed it. I’ll have to do some more...

Secondly that I went for a really fuzzy look with grain in the processing, which kind of mucked up the experiment entirely (all that nonsense about sharp edges)...

Thirdly this is an image of nothing much in particular. But I rather like it. Weird.

Fourthly I am really quite fascinated by the way snowdrops move in the wind - they all oscillate at different frequencies. But I’ll say more about that later (assuming the anti-idea don’t reappear and annihilate my brain of course).

Fifthly, I’ve invented the MExICM genre in case you hadn’t noticed, but I’m keeping quiet about it just now.

Sixthly. I can’t count. But most people won’t read this drivel (because they are Sensible People) so I should be OK…

For my 100x project on Motion, and for the marvellous (but never the comic) Donnerstagsmonocrom (just how do you spell that? I know... T-H-A-T. Gosh it’s been a really bad day…) group. Oh, and Monochrome Bokeh Thursday :)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday and 100x. HMBT :)
