Frampton on Severn Tithe Barn Wall.

Tithes were medieval taxes, normally paid to the parish priest. A tenth of the produce of the land.

The tithes were often stored in large and impressive barns. There are over 200 such medieval barns in England.

Frampton is a village a few miles west of where I live, on the flood plain of the Severn River. It boasts the longest village green in England and was owned (and still is in part I believe) by the family of Henry the 2nd’s mistress. Not that I am name dropping of course…

Frampton tithe barn was built in the 15th century so, to put it in context, this building comfortably predates the European colonisation of America.

In those days buildings were often constructed using wattle and daub. A frame of woven wood (the wattle) was used to support a mud or plaster surfacing.

This barn wall seems to have wattle without the daub (you can tell I don’t really know what I am talking about lol). But it’s also the outside wall, so definitely without and not within :)

This image was taken pointing the camera upwards. I wanted something with structure and texture that would give me something to play with for my monochrome challenge. Lovely cobwebs too...

I’m still feeling pretty naive about monochrome. I’ve worked out that it involves textures and shapes, but it also relies on the brightness of the light (plenty of incisive thinking there!).

At the moment I feel monchrome controls me, rather than the other way around. Ah well. Perhaps after another 96 images I’ll have a better clue. Let’s hope so for both our sakes :)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday :)

2020 Monochrome: 3/100

[Handheld in daylight.
Developed conventionally in Photolab 3.
Sharpened with Unsharp Mask and High Pass/Linear blend mode.
Rather than using a vignette I used the Lighting Filter to add light shining up in a cone from the centre bottom. The idea was to give a sense of relief to the overall image, rather than just a bland texture. Not sure it actually worked - what do you think?
Converted in Nik Silver Efex starting from a low key preset. Light sepia toning]
