82001 was originally E3047 and is one of a class of ten locomotives designed by the Metropolitan Vickers division of AEI (Associated Electrical Industries) and built by Beyer, Peacock and Company at their works in Gorton, Manchester. They were originally classified as AL2 and E3047 entered traffic in July 1960, allocated to Longsight MPD. The class had a tendency to catch fire and two (E3046 and E3055) were damaged beyond repair in 1971 and 1966 respectively. The remaining eight locomotives were placed into storage in 1982 and the majority of these locomotives were withdrawn in July 1983 including 82001. It was broken up at Vic Berry, Leicester in March 1985.

Five were broken up in 1984/85 but two, 82005 and 82008 were subsequently reinstated for use on empty coaching stock workings between Euston Station and Willesden and worked until 1987. 82003 was the third locomotive not broken up in 1984/85 but it was not reinstated instead it would slowly rot for ten years until eventually broken up at CF Booth, Rotherham in June 1993.
