20011 leads 20015 out of Toton Up yard with a long mixed freight and heads for Trent Junction, 1st September 1980. The first two wagons appear to be medium open goods wagons and they are followed by a long string of 16 ton mineral wagons loaded with coal with the first six being vacuum braked and along with the two medium goods could be forming a fitted head. After the 16 tonners there is a mix of wagons including what looks like a grain hopper and bring up the rear just before the brake van are a string of sheeted opens. The buildings behind the train are the wagon repair shops which are still standing but long out of use and most of this end of the Up yard has now been overgrown by silver birch.
Locomotive History
20011 was originally D8011 and is one of the original batch of twenty class 20 locomotives built by English Electric in 1957. It entered traffic in October 1957 allocated to Devons Road MPD in Bow, London to work cross-London transfer freights. It remained in the London area until July 1969 when it transferred to Toton. Four years later in September 1973 it transferred north to Glasgow Eastfield returning to Toton a few months prior to this photograph. Its stay at Toton was short and was followed by transfer to Immingham before its final transfer to Tinsley from where it was withdrawn in February 1987. It would linger for almost seven years before broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in January 1994. 20015 was originally D8015 and is also one of the original batch of twenty class 20 locomotives built by English Electric in 1957. It entered traffic in October 1957 and was withdrawn from Immingham in July 1987, being broken up in October 1988 by Vic Berry on site at Thornaby depot.

20097 leads 20071 heading a class 9 unfitted freight train of empty coal wagons at Lenton South Junction, 3rd September 1980.
Locomotive History
20097 dates from 1961 and was originally D8097. It was a Scottish based locomotive for a long time (as denoted by the cab recess for single line token exchange equipment) until it moved south to Toton in the mid 1970’s. I first saw this locomotive on Eastfield MPD on the 23rd April 1972. It lasted in service until September 1989 and it was broken up by MC Metals Glasgow in October 1991. 20071 dates from 1961 and was originally D8071. It lasted in service until March 1992 and it was broken up by MC Metals Glasgow in March 1995.

20113 leads an unidentified member of the class east through Lenton South Junction with a empty unfitted coal train made up exclusively of 21 ton coal hoppers, 3rd September 1980. These empties have not taken the junction for Lenton North and the Leen Valley collieries so are almost certainly heading for Gedling colliery. After nationalisation in 1948 British Railways continued to build London and North Eastern Railway design coal hopper wagons with both welded and riveted bodies. Over twenty three thousand were built between 1949 and 1958 to five diagrams 1/141, 1/143, 1/145, 1/146 and 1/149 with the vast majority (nearly seventeen thousand) to diagram 1/146. They finally disappeared in the late 1980’s. I misjudged the composition of this shot as I have chopped the top off the brake van at the rear of the train
Locomotive History
20113 was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington and entered traffic in February 1962, allocated to Eastfield MPD. It migrated to Toton in November 1969 for a two year spell before returning to Scotland. In November 1973 it returned to Toton. Although only vacuum braked 20113 avoided the large scale storage of the Toton vacuum braked class 20 fleet in 1982/83 due to the reduction in coal traffic from pit closures and the continued introduction of air braked MGR coal wagons. In early 1984 20113 entered Crewe works for classified repair and emerged in May 1984 now dual braked and able operate air braked MGR coal duties. Withdrawn from Toton in August 1991 it found a new lease of life with RFS for Channel Tunnel construction duties and was numbered RFS2005. Following the completion of the Channel Tunnel it was purchased by DRS for spares and was steadily stripped at Carlisle until the shell was broken up by Harry Needle on site in December 2003.

20159 leads 20198 south through Toton with a loaded unfitted coal train made up almost exclusively of 21 ton coal hoppers, 1st September 1980.
Locomotive History
Following the failure of the class 17 Claytons British Rail returned to its initial Type 1 design and ordered another hundred class 20 locomotives from English Electric. 20159 is one of this later batch of class 20’s built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. It entered traffic in September 1966 and was allocated new to the Nottingham Division (in reality Toton) and was withdrawn from Toton twenty five years later in August 1991 having (as far as I can tell) been a Toton engine all its life. It was broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in January 1991. Following withdrawal it found a new lease of life with RFS for Channel Tunnel construction duties and was numbered RFS2010. Following the completion of the Channel Tunnel it was stored until finally broken up by HNRC at EMR Kingsbury in August 2005. 20198 is also from the later batch of class 20’s and entered traffic in April 1967. It lasted in traffic until withdrawn in July 1991 and was broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in October 1993.

20170 and 20143 haul a loaded class 9 unfitted coal train from one of the Leen Valley collieries round the curve from Lenton North Junction to join the “main line” at Lenton South Junction on its way to either one of the older Trent Valley power stations or Toton yard, 3rd September 1980. The train is made up of a mixture of 21 ton and 24 ton coal hoppers and 16 ton and 21 ton mineral wagons. Although a couple of the 16 ton wagons could be vacuum fitted (bauxite painted) the majority of the train is running unfitted and therefore the only braking available to stop this train of at least thirty two wagons (at least 650 tons) would be that of the two locomotives and the 20 ton brake van that would be bringing up the rear. 20170 was originally D8170 and was built in 1966. It was allocated to Toton from new and was withdrawn in September 1991 still allocated to Toton. 20143 was originally D8143 and was also built in 1966. It was allocated to Toton from new, survived a period in store in 1986 and was finally withdrawn in January 1992 also still allocated to Toton. As far as I can tell neither of these two locomotives were ever transferred and spent there whole life at Toton. They were broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow in June 1993 and August 1993 respectively.
