Class 08 diesel shunter 13180 is engaged in a spot of shunting at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre at Ruddington, 27th March 2011.

Locomotive History
13180 was built at Derby works and entered traffic in October 1955 allocated to Derby MPD. Two months later it transferred to Saltley however its stay was brief as it was back as a Derby engine in March 1956. In June 1956 it transferred to Cricklewood East where in December 1959 it was re-numbered D3180 under the 1957 re-numbering scheme. It would remain at Cricklewood until November 1967 when it returned to Derby. Its final transfer to Doncaster was in October 1971 where it was renumbered 08114 under the 1973 TOPS scheme and from where it was withdrawn in November 1983. 08114 managed to evade the scrap yard and by 1993 was at the Great Central Railway at Loughborough. It has since made the short journey to the Great Central Railway (North).

Grosmont MPD pilot on the 13th March 2011 is 08850.

Locomotive History
Originally D4018 it was built at Horwich works and entered traffic in June 1961, allocated to Bristol St Phillips Marsh MPD. It quickly transferred to Bristol Bath Road where it would remain through out the 1960’s and the first half of the 1970’s. In January 1975 it was equipped with dual brakes and waist height air brake fittings to enable coupling to Southern Region electric multiple unit stock and transferred to Eastleigh. Its stay on the Southern Region was short as by 1978 it had become surplus and had transferred to Cardiff. By 1979 it was a Reading engine where it would stay until withdrawn in December 1992. Initially preserved on the West Somerset Railway, this locomotive moved up to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway arriving in March 1998. It is currently (March 2011) based at Grosmont and sees use as station or shed pilot.

Stabled adjacent to the sand tower outside Toton depot is a shabby looking 09017, 19th March 2011.

Locomotive History
09017 was built at Horwich works as D4105 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. Entering traffic in November 1961 it was originally allocated to Chester MPD however it was decided to concentrate the higher speed locomotives on the Southern Region where there higher speed would be useful in working between the intensive passenger service and D4105 transferred to Feltham in August 1968. This was followed by a long period allocated to Selhurst on the closure of Feltham in 1970. In 1987 09017 was transferred to Cardiff for use on the Severn Tunnel emergency train and to reflect its new use 09017 was renumbered into the departmental fleet as 97806. It remained on this duty for the next eleven years until returned to normal duties during 1998 and was renumbered back to 09017. It remained active in the Cardiff/Newport area stored at Newport Docks in December 2008. It returned to traffic on the 7th May 2009 and remained in use until moved to Toton on the 2nd March 2010 where it was placed into store. It would appear to have had some sort of repair judging by the recently painted (black!) “battery box” and was reported to be in use as depot pilot a few days after this photograph was taken. Following its sale by DB Schenker in August 2011 it was transported to its new home, the National Railway Museum at York.

Freshly repainted but unnumbered English Electric 350 bhp 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter stands in the yard at Pickering, 13th March 2011. The locomotive has had applied a British Railways emblem and normally carries the number 12139. At first glance it would appear to be one of the one hundred and six class 11 locomotives built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway and British Railways at Derby works between 1945 and 1952. However “12139” was actually one of three locomotives built by English Electric in 1948 to the class 11 design for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) for use at their Wilton complex and named 'Redcar'. On withdrawal it was acquired by the Mid Hants Railway in August 1982 and used for engineering trains. In September 1983 it moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is normally based at Grosmont for MPD and station pilot duties. The number 12139 follows on from the class 11 number series 12033 – 12138.
