This bear cub was feeding with a sibling and it's mother. They were in a pond eating salmon that had spawned and were close to dying. Got to watch them for a few minutes and grab some photos of them. It was dark and shooting a higher ISO and was happy with the results.

We came across a black bear scavenging for salmon near Valdez Alaska. The bear would pick up salmon carcasses and eat some and drop others that were too rotted. In this photo, the black bear noticed the photographer and for a quick instance, froze in it's tracks. After this photo, the bear went to a large rock and began digging under the rock for a salmon that was lodged underneath it. The strength of the bear was amazing, with no effort at all it moved a rock that was half buried in the mud that had to weigh over 50 lbs.

This black bear was digging under a rock for a salmon that had died there. It dug for about 5 minutes stopping often to check it's surroundings. There were hundreds of salmon carcasses laying around but the bear wanted the one under the rock.

Looking back as it climbed up a rock to disappear back into the heavy vegetation, a black bear looks towards the photographer. We seen this bear walking along a stream bed of mud and dead salmon. It ate some of the dead fish and spent a few minutes digging under a rock for food. This bear was near Valdez, where black and brown bears are often seen in the same area. It is also a popular fishing spot for the salmon during their migration back into fresh water to spawn. We have seen both black and brown bears in our journeys to Valdez in the past. This was the first time the photographer got to photograph the bears, the black bears tend to be really shy around people.

Black and brown bears wait along the freshwater streams that flow into the ocean each year for salmon returning from the sea. In this photo, a black bear sow brings a salmon to the shore for her two cubs. Taken late in the evening near Valdez, it was a treat so see and watch the sow and two cubs.
