One of my favorite benches to sit on and soak up the view is here at Jasper's Maligne Lake. The bench isn't far from the cruise boat docks that take one to iconic Spirit Island.
The historic red-roofed Curly Phillips Boathouse is nearby with Mt. Charlton and Mt. Unwin in the distance catching the last light of this fine day.
Thank for taking a look and for any comments, faves and suggestions.

Today is Canada Day!
As you probably can tell by the many images I post from this amazing country I'm a big fan of the people, culture and spectacular beauty of Canada.
In tribute to my favorite neighbor and my friends there here's a shot of the cruise boat leaving iconic Spirit Island on Lake Maligne.
"Canada Day, formerly (until 1982) Dominion Day, the national holiday of Canada. The possibility of a confederation between the colonies of British North America was discussed throughout the mid-1800s. On July 1, 1867, a dominion was formed through the British North America Act as approved by the British Parliament. It consisted of territories then called Upper and Lower Canada and of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The act divided Canada into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and it included provisions for other colonies and territories to join in the future, which made possible the growth of Canada into its present form. The act served as Canada’s constitution until 1982, and July 1 was celebrated as Dominion Day.
By terms of the Canada Act of 1982, the British North America Act was repatriated from the British to the Canadian Parliament, and Canada became a fully independent country. At the same time, the name of the national holiday was changed to Canada Day. It is celebrated with parades, displays of the flag, the singing of the national anthem, “O Canada,” and fireworks. When July 1 falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on the following day." britannica.com

Spirit Island before.....the Pine Bark Beetle infestation since has turned much of the forest around Maligne Lake orange, trees dying by the day. That includes some of the trees on this iconic island (peninsula). It doesn't look like this now.
Here is a picture I took of this special place in early October 2016. Trees healthy and beautiful. One of North America's most iconic scenes. No longer.
Climate change damage is here, now. The damage will be for generations, if not longer. I don't have any recent photos of this view to show what's happening here. Fortunately a good FB friend and exceptional photojournalist William McIntosh wrote a great article regarding what he found just a couple years later on his trip here. For comparison, please check out his moving article and images.

William's article is from 5 years ago.....even more damage has been done since.

Thanks for any and all efforts you support and provide to address this vital challenge. For our future. As well for the wildlife, the shrinking ecosystems (Glacier Park etc) and our dear Earth.

Cruising by Maligne Lake's Spirit Island. The only other way to see this iconic scene is in a kayak. Maybe next time. Would be quite a workout.
Declared the “Best Boat Cruise in Canada” by 8 million Reader’s Digest subscribers, the Maligne Lake Cruise is an experience like no other. Sure is the best, and favorite, in my experience.
Have a wonderful week ahead. I always enjoy turning the calendar on January. Hello February soon!

The historic Curly Phillips Boathouse floating calmly under stormy skies.
"Donald Nelson "Curly" Phillips was a Canadian guide, outfitter, entrepreneur, and explorer who was a part of many pioneering expeditions in the northern Canadian Rockies in the early twentieth century. He settled in Jasper, Alberta, and was involved in the development of mountain tourism in the region.
He built the historic boathouse in 1928 to accommodate the guests of his hunting and fishing trips. To boost his business, he raised the Maligne Lake rainbow trout, which he transported in barrels to Maligne Lake. Until his sudden death in an avalanche in 1936, he lived and dwelt in the boat house, which is now run by the Maligne Lake Tours." Wiki
