Image Description: |
This was probably my favorite spot on our bike trip throught the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's the log slide overlook in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. As the name suggests, many years ago they used to roll logs down the steep cliffs here so that they could be transported to mills elsewhere on Lake Superior. There is no more log sliding but it is possible to slide oneself down the steep sandy cliffs. We'd heard that lots of people get stuck on the beach here, unable to make the strenuous climb back up to the top. The sand is so loose that it can feel like one step forewards and two steps back. I fully expected to have to carry our four year old back up but she did it all by herself. This picture doesn't do justice to the grandeur of the scene. It's an incredible place that I highly recommend visiting. |
