Image Description: |
Great blue herons aren't the most graceful of birds, but I thought this pose was pretty good. The white background is the frozen-over and snow-covered Fox River. Just below the heron is a very small bit of open water where a tributary flows into the river. There were several herons, ducks, and gulls fighting for the small bit of real estate that was available. It struck me that it's analogous to those drying up waterholes in the middle of the African savannah. The obvious differences are that it's bitterly cold instead of burning hot, and there are no animals that might decide to eat the photographer. The "watering hole" and the heron were shadowed by an overpass to the left of the frame. Instead of trying to lighten up the heron I decided to leave it dark and go with something close to a silhoutte. |
