Image Description: |
I was pretty thrilled to get this shot. A red tailed hawk striking an elegant pose on a tree drizzled with some fresh snow. And to top it off some nice backlighting that made it seem like a spotlight was shining on the subject. For a second I almost felt like a real wildlife photographer. But then I realized that a real wildlife photographer would probably not be on the edge of frostbite while getting the shot. She or he would have the right clothing to stand motionless for as long as it took to get the shot without disturbing the animal. In any case, I really didn't mind the freeze in these circumstances. It's one of the things I constantly deal with as I attempt to simultaneously pursue my two hobbies, photography and cycling. The two activities go together well in the sense that I'm able to cover a lot of ground and often go to places that are otherwise difficult to access. But in the winter the clothes I need to stay warm without overheating on the bike are not nearly sufficient to keep me from freezing when I'm standing still. I try to plan for this by bringing extra clothes in my backpack. The problem is that when a photographic opportunity presents itself I don't have time to waste putting on extra clothes. Someday I'll figure out a better system... |
