Image Description: |
I've wanted to see a snowy owl in the wild for a long time. I wasn't sure if it would ever happen, as often there are only a couple of sightings per year in Illinois. But every once in a while there is an "invasion" of snowy owls. On an invasion year there can be several hundred sightings. This is one of those years. Apparently snowy owls have descended to various areas in the upper midwest and the east coast as far south as North Carolina. This female snowy owl has been wintering in a location that is surprisingly close to a major metropolitan area. I won't disclose the exact location, but it is within biking distance from where I live in Chicago. This is the third time I was fortunate enough to see this bird, and the first time that I had my telephoto lens with me. It was really a nice place for her to pose on a snow covered ridge overlooking Lake Michigan. In this picture the owl is getting ready to take off as an oblivious person with two dogs running off the leash is fast approaching. It's pretty amazing to me that this bird has decided to winter in a place where there are so many people around. Hopefully it is not getting too stressed by all the people who are (mostly) inadvertently flushing it. In any case, it's been an amazing experience to be able to observe this owl (and one other) for the last few weeks, and I'm happy that I was able to get a few reasonably good pictures along the way. |
