El Obelisco seen from Avenida Corrientes.

The obelisk was inaugurated 23 May 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first founding of Buenos Aires in 1536.

The obelisk was erected on the site where the national flag was first raised in the city, in what is now Plaza de la República.

67.5 metres high the obelisk was was designed by Argentine modernist architect Alberto Prebisch.
