Every once in a while you are traveling you find a place that reminds you of home whether it’s the landscape or the people or some combination of both and we found this at our accommodations for the evening outside of Satriano di Lucania with a little cottage called B&B Rifugio Della Luna. The place reminded us of our own cottage at least the vibe was that for us, peaceful, quaint and all that you needed for the evening to recharge before hitting the road again along with some excellent restaurants nearby as the crow flies.

This view of Satriano di Lucania captured through the front porch swing of the cottage was almost all we saw of the most famous of the Mural villages, the several hundred murals are there to celebrate the greatest son of the town Giovanni de Gregorio, more often known as il Pietrafesa, one of Basilicata’s most famous painters. Pietrafesa was also the name of the village throughout history until 1887 when it was decided to rename the place after the ruins of the ancient Lucan stronghold Satrianum, whose remains lie on the mountain behind the town.

There are recognized to be 190 villages in all of Italy that are designated as true authentic villages, Satriano di Lucania is included in the list for its artistic wealth also for having been the capital of murals for Italy since 1988. There are over 400 murals in the village at last count decorating whatever outside wall space is available depicting themes ranging from ancient trades, magical beliefs to scenes from the life of il Pietrafesa during his period in the later half of the 17th century.

I took this on Sept 24, 2018 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 Lens at 34mm 1/25s f`11 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , and DXO
