The Golden Brown Café
One of my favorite things about the Netherlands is its plentiful supply of “Brown Bars/Cafes”, these establishments serve the locals as casual neighborhood gathering spots for beer and light snacks and are epitomized by the feeling of gezelligheid (welcoming coziness) one feels when entering or stumbling out at 1 or 2am looking for the nearest Kroketten (Dutch Croquette) machine.
Since we are at a Brown Café it is a good time to tell a story in this case how residents of Amersfoort became to be called "keien trekkers", which translates roughly to "boulder pullers".
The story goes that In the 17th century a Squire named Everhard Meyster bet his friends that he could get the locals to move a 8 ton boulder from the outskirts of town to the town square.
After providing an open bar for most of the day Everhard convinces the drunk citizens that moving this boulder would be a grand idea to which they all cheered and then 400 or so of the least drunk rolled/pulled the boulder into the main square much to Everhard’s delight and fattened purse.
Word got out about this prank on the citizens and the local were nicknamed keien trekkers for years before they buried their shame, the boulder in 1672 but the boulder wouldn’t stay hidden and was rediscovered while making repairs in 1903 and now sits proudly displayed by the locals
