Where Hitler declared the annexation of Austria, and hundreds of thousands of Austrians cheered him - he must have had such charisma......makes me wonder about some of the current crop of world politicians...... Happily, all this scary wondering does not detract from the beauty of the buildings in this lovely city!
Not sure who the stone maiden is, ( she seems to be representing war and peace?) but she is there as part of the Statue of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor (then Emperor of Austria), Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Bohemia etc. (reigned 1792-1835). The statue, by Milanese sculptor Pompeo Marchesi, was erected in 1846; it lies in the Burg square of the Hofburg complex, Vienna
