Memories of Southall station It was the Thursday before Easter Sunday, and I had stationed myself at my old childhood spotting haunt of Southall footbridge (now sadly dismantled) to photograph some of the Easter relief services that were timetabled. Of course back then there was plenty of traction to interest the photographer :)

Here we see a view of rail freight liveried Class 47 'Brush Type 4' 47374 taking the crossovers at Southall on an oll train - heading for Southall West Yard. A fairly unusual manoeuvre even at the time, captured for posterity 😎

Southall Rail Crash Ten years later, this exact manoeuvre was the cause of the fatal collision with an HST. A very sad thought - in fact, as a young spotter, I always felt a bit concerned on the footbridge when one of these freights trundled over the fast lines - I even felt a shiver sometimes imagining what might happen - now it seems I was having a premonition of some sort? More information here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southall_rail_crash

Taken with a Soviet made Zenith TTL SLR camera and 300mm telephoto lens, using Kodak ASA100 colour negative film. Scanned from the original negative with no digital restoration.

Blimey, I had no idea sheep could be so dangerous if you see them eating grass

My last day on the Island (for 1971) and this unexpected Royal Tiger was "snapped" before taking our suitcases to the Bus Stn .
No,91 was built in 1952 and wasnt withdrawn until 1977 - not bad!

A quick calculation whilst waiting at the IOM Airport , that I would probably make it if I hurried off on foot to Ballasalla station to see my last IOM 1971 steam loco. I made it - and back !

Thats it then - my first week long visit to the IOM ended up (photographically speaking ) at Ballasalla Stn with IOMR No 4, "Loch" departing. I would retun in the summer of 1972 , albeit just for a few days) .
