Aljezur's castle was built and occupied by the moors during XII and XIII centuries. This was the last moor castle to fall to christian kings in Portuguese territory, though the exact date is not clear (often claimed to be 1249, but other accounts put it as early as 1242). This is one of the seven castles represented in the Portuguese shield (and flag). The castle was abandoned in the XVI century and it suffered many damages in the great earthquake of 1755.
