Abandoned for more than a century, the Crystal Mill, which is a misnomer, sits on an outcrop above the Crystal River. The structure is actually the remnants of a powerhouse that used a water turbine to power tools for the nearby mines. Getting to this location is not for the faint of heart. The safest methods are hiking or biking in, but I was not prepared to make the seven mile trek solo in the dark. Crystal River Jeep Tours was kind enough to meet me at 4:45 am in early October 2021 to ferry me to the site. I had this place to myself for nearly two hours and made the most of it.

Upstate South Carolina is a special place in springtime. This is Lee Falls--the hidden gem of Oconee County. There is no official trail, so a special thanks to Tommy White of Mountains to Sea Photography for guiding the way. Nearing sunset, we double-timed the first 1.3 miles alternating field and stream crossings before reaching the fork at Tamassee Creek, which is where any semblance of a path ends. The remainder of the route involved wading through deeper water and scrambling over some steep rocks, but we were rewarded with this view as the sun disappeared behind the crest of the falls.
