On the 17th September 1966 this private aircraft Piper Cherokee G-ASEK crashed in cloud into ‘Knotts of Tongue’ in the English lake District . Unfortunately both the Pilot and passenger were killed.
They were
Mr. G. Massey Pilot
Mr. L. Aitchison Passenger
Aircraft Wrecks (Wotherspoon,Clark,Sheldon) says that the pilot was attempting to fly beneath the cloud using the col at ‘Esk Hause’ to attempt to fly into Eskdale valley. They didn’t make it , just clipping the rocky outcrop that is the top of ‘Knotts of Tongue’, ripping a wing off and smashing into a stone strewn plateau from which the outcrop only protrudes a few metres. Only a small variation in flight path would have seen them over the col and fly out into the relatively vast space above Eskdale and safety.
This is he engine block ,still looking in quite good condition.

Esk Hause is probably the busiest pass in the whole of the Lake District , perhaps the whole of Britain . Thousands of walkers , a day on a summers weekend, will pass through on route to a variety of high mountain trails. Very few ever take take the time to walk (the flat and level) 100m required to view this crash site . Not many will even know of its existance .
Today we were passed by hundreds of walkers , charging off on the super highway paths , cairned and regimented to stand atop the highest English mountains . Yet few think to explore those mountain tops and slopes , less discover those alternate sights and hidden viewpoints all preferring to stick with the known.
Pictured in this shot ,taken from the nub of rock that the aircraft collided with is Susan stood by the main wreckage pool. beyond her is the engine . Further small fragments lay scattered at the base of the rock.
