The Plains Bison, like me, have this park mostly to themselves all winter. They see very few people, very few vehicles at close range. And being wild animals, their responses are unpredictable. Sometimes they will stand around and watch me slowly drive past them; that happened yesterday. Other times, such as this morning last December, they'll break into a herd-driven gallop and disappear into the hills. This group of 75 animals came over the crest of a hill, saw not one but two humans standing beside the rolling red Toyota car blind, veered away and charged down the slope, spraying snow and drumming the earth with their hooves. An exciting moment! Then they were gone.
