Red-Tailed Hawk.

At 18 to 25 inches long with a wingspan of 4 feet, the Red-Tailed Hawk is a large stocky hawk. Typical light-phased birds have a whitish breast and a rust-colored tail. Young birds are duller, more streaked and lack the rust-colored tail of the adult. They are distinguished from the Red-Shouldered and Swainson's hawks by their white chest, stocky build and broader, more rounded wings. This bird is quite variable in coloring especially in the West where blackish individuals occur usually retaining the rusty tail.

They inhabit deciduus forests and open country of various kinds including tundra, plains and farmlands.

They range from Alaska east to Nova Scotia and southward throught the United States. They winter from southern British Columbia to Canada's maritime provinces.

Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan.
