This caviar-like jelly appeared on a birch log in my yard. Is it some sort of fungus? After a week it exploded around the vicinity in what looks like a shower of ground espresso - it must be spores.

that resembled white caviar, then after about a week expoded as a powdery fine-ground espresso stuff, all the way from stump to the stucco wall of the building about a foot away (see photo of building wall with fine brown powder on it). Is this a slime mold? It must be in the fungus family.Unfortunately I missed seeing what happened during the week.
