Panagia Hozoviotissa (Our Lady the Virgin Mary) Monastery, just outside Xora, Amorgos. It was built in the 11th Century, which makes it Byzantine. In ancient Greece, monasteries were usually built at an isolated site, often by a cave where a monk was already living in ascetic solitude, and usually a site that was felt to be spiritually inspiring in some way. In Byzantine monastery architecture, view was primary. This location, nestled against a remote cliff, had all of these characteristics. The Greek islands defended themselves against piracy for millennia (Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans, everyone else) and this monastery was clearly also built for defence.
