Apparently weathered out of the sod tables or other formations that once stood here. Most seem to be water-rounded, as if once tumbled in a river. I noticed a lot of black igneous-looking stones, and quartz, which would have been created elsewhere ---- Black Hills? This area was not covered by glaciers, and the main channels of the river were below, so I'm not clear on the source of these stone fields.
