Cologne - Spires of Old St. Heribert church illuminated by sunset light

Alt St Heribert is the former abbey church of Deutz Abbey, a Benedictine monastery located at Deutz, now part of Cologne. The abbey was founded in 1003 on the site of a Roman fort by the future Saint Heribert, Archbishop of Cologne, close adviser of Emperor Otto III. Heribert died in 1021 and was buried in the Romanesque church he had had built here. [Wikipedia] It is not clear if it is the same church standing today. Most of the abbey was heavily damaged during WWII.

The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps [Wikipedia] The gate survived in the medieval times, when many Roman structures were destroyed for building materials, by being converted into a church.
