The late Representative John Lewis put this store on the map by leading a sit-down strike at the lunch counter. Students from Fisk University sat down at the counter and stayed there waiting to be served. It is slated to become a civil rights museum.

Lewis was serving as governor of Louisiana when he returned home to answer charges of embezzlement, probably caused by his assistant.. Though rumor had it that he committed suicide, eyewitness accounts had it that three men showed up here and killed him. So went one of America's greatest explorers.

The tavern was built to attract some of the tourist trade coming to the area to see the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. The cabin was moved to the site to show the kind of dwelling which the Lincolns lived during their residence at Knob Creek Farm.
