This was an opportunist image on the back of a genuine Merthyr Tydfil version. Both Welsh municipalities had operated Bristol L5Gs, although the body style depicted seems to have been unique to Merthyr Tydfil. Aberdare was an early adopter of the 'reversed' mainly cream livery, applying it to several of its half-cab single-deckers. In additional to the L5Gs, it also operated double deck Bristol Ks and later bought rear-engined Bristol RESL single-deckers (03-Oct-09).

This digitally-coloured image is based on an original monochrome version by Mike Street . Aberdare UDC No 5 (TNG 495G) was one of six Willowbrook-bodied AEC Reliances delivered in 1968. The original livery of cream with red roof and waistband gave way to a less attractive all-over cherry red in the 1970s. The fleet passed to Cynon Valley District Council following local government reorganisation in 1974. The batch of Reiiances remained intact until replaced by Leyland Nationals from 1979. Three were exported to Malta, where they were converted into single-door route buses. Two remained in service earlier this year (2009).

I've wanted to do this for a long time and I have to say that I'm very pleased with the result. Ex-Aberdare AEC Reliance DBY 300 always looked so smart on Malta that I wondered what it would like restored to orginal Aberdare livery, but retaining it Maltese modifications. It has been refitted with a destination display and carries its original UK registration (with the Maltese version displayed in the windscreen). An interesting and unusual addition to any collection of preserved Welsh buses, it would no doubt be rebuilt to original UK condition in time (23-Dec-12).

After buying AEC Reliances, Aberdare acquired a batch of ECW-bodied Bristol RESLs but these were of the later Series III design rather than the Series II depicted here. The short RESL was well suited to the steep, twisting roads that dissected the Welsh Valleys. When further new examples were no longer available, Aberdare turned to the short Leyland National but the RESLs led a full life with successor Cynon Valley Transport and, ultimately, Stagecoach subsidiary Red & White Services (23-Apr-11).

The ECW-bodied Bristol RESL Series III was popular with local authorities in the valleys of South Wales. Aberdare UDC bought an initial seven and Gelligaer UDC three. Cynon Valley Transport - successor to Aberdare UDC - bought a further nine, and Rhymney Valley District Council - which was formed by the merger of Bedwas & Machen, Caerphilly and Gelligaer UDCs - bought three. Rhymney Valley was later bought by Western Welsh and Cynon Valley by Red & White. Both companies subsequently merged to become National Welsh Omnibus Services. Several RESL passed with part of the National Welsh business to Stagecoach, becoming the only Bristol REs to receive Stagecoach corporate livery – one for the future, perhaps? (25-Feb-22).
