I've previously done a couple of digital representations of these Army 'Green Goddess look-alikes' - but here's the real thing courtesy of Philip Kirk of the Kithead Trust (www.kitheadtrust.org.uk). This is a Plaxton archive photograph, digitally-coloured but otherwise unmodified. Plaxton was one several bodybuilders to receive substantial orders from the Home Office for this standard design of auxiliary fire tender in the 1950s, originally on the 4x2 Bedford S-Type chassis and later on the R-Type as illustrated. The later style grille with chrome surround was unique to vehicles supplied to the Army Fire Service and the Irish Auxilliary Fire Service (13-Dec-15).

This remarkable photograph from the collection of Ron Henderson was one of the most challenging digital-colouring projects that I’ve attempted. From left to right, it shows Mercedes-Benz L-Series, Magirus-Deutz and Mercedes-Benz Unimog-based airfield crash tenders. RAF Germany sourced and disposed of many of its vehicles locally. The RAF formally ended its 56-year presence in Germany in 2001 (22-Dec-18).

In addition to their specialist vehicles, the British Armed Forces have always used significant numbers of civilian types for non-combat roles. Post-war types included the AEC Mammoth Major and Mercury; Austin Loadstar; Bedford O, A, S and TK; Fordson Thames ET7; Karrier Bantam; Leyland Mastiff; and Scammell Mechanical Horse, Scarab and Constructor. This 4x2 Bedford TK is fitted with a military-style steel body of the type fitted by Marshalls of Cambridge to 4x4 Bedford MK and MJ models (19-Jul-19).

It is unlikely that any of the RAF's DP3 Airfield Crash Tenders received this short-lived NATO green colour scheme; and certainly not this particular example, which passed to the civilian Malta Airport fire services when the British Forces withdrew from Malta in 1979. The registration is, incidentally fictitious, as I have no knowledge of its original RAF registration (01-Oct-13).

The locally-assembled Hino ZM was popular with Irish operators, including the Irish Civil Defence Corps. The regimental markings on this fictional ZM tipper may be incorrect as I have little knowledge of Irish military vehicles. The vehicle in the base image was photograhed in Cyprus twenty years ago, when it already seemed well past its prime (06-Sep-20).
