2590 HN was delivered new to United Automobile Services in 1960 as a 41-seat dual-purpose vehicle (fleet number UE 590). It was re-seated as a 45-seat service bus and repainted red over the winter of 1967/8, but retained the additional aluminium trim as evidence of its former existence. In January 1969, it was one of 21 single-deckers that passed with United's Carlisle operations to Ribble Motor Services as part of the newly-formed National Bus Company's redrawing of company boundaries. This vehicle features in the BT Models range as Ribble fleet number 270 (01-Dec-17)..

The final style of ECW coach body on the Bristol MW chassis incorporated forced air ventilation, necessitating omission of the roof windows normally fitted to earlier versions. Many also had bus-style power-operated doors, a feature that later facilitated conversion to service bus specification (often with a more substantial destination unit in the front dome). This fictional Eastern Counties Bristol MW in NBC local coach (or dual-purpose) livery represents a half-way house. Such vehicles would have typically been employed on express bus services and private hire work, with the ability to stand-in for service buses and touring coaches as required (09-Apr-17).

The Bristol MW was beyond its ‘sell by’ date by the time that the National Bus Company unveiled its corporate liveries; nevertheless, a considerable number of MWs received the new colours and, indeed, the first NBC-liveried bus that I saw was a Bristol MW. Many MW coaches received the ‘half and half’ dual-purpose (DP) scheme before being fully downgraded to service bus status, for which they were not really suited. This DP-liveried MW is depicted on local bus work with an improvised route number displayed in the windscreen (10-Nov-19).

Despite its predilection for Bedford coaches, Southern Vectis did take two standard Tilling Group Bristol MW coaches in 1958. I believe that coaches lasted into National Bus Company days but not long enough to receive NBC livery (04-Oct-19).

Solent Blue line was a post-deregulation mainland offspring of Southern Vectis. Its initially fleet comprised mainly of Bristol VRs from the parent company, including some elderly Series Is, later supplemented and replaced by new vehicles. It adopted a striking yellow and due-tone blue livery, not unlike Kelvin Scottish, which was later applied in a simplified style. I'm not aware of any open-toppers in the original style illustrated here, but it did receive some in a later Southern Vectis-style livery for an open-top route through the New Forest (15-Jul-17).
