This ERF is a little before my time so I may have got the model designation wrong (clarification or correction welcome). In any event, it is a very elegant vehicle with a bespoke body for Ushers Brewery of Trowbridge in Wiltshire. Established in 1824, Ushers had a long and complicated history up to closure in 2000. Once again, I am indebted to Graham Newell for the original monochrome image from his extensive collection of manufacturers photos. In this case, my copyright assertion applies to the colour overlay only (01-May-20).

You are welcome to link to this image but it would be a criminal offence to post a copy of the image itself to Facebook or anywhere else. Additional information about my Flickr collection and the techniques used can be found here:

ER Foden & Son (ERF) was an offshoot from the legendary truck builder Foden of Sandbach. At a time when the latter was still wedded to steam technology, ERF set about building the 'finest oil-engine lorries in the world'. It did so by buying it proven and trusted components such as Gardner diesel engines and outsourcing cab construction to a local firm, Jennings of Sandbach, whom it later acquired. The 1954 Kleer Vue (KV) cab , illustrated here, was designed jointly by ERF and Jennings. Its futuristic design incorporated one of the very first applications of curved glass in a commercial vehicle and one which reputedly caused manufacturer Triplex many production difficulties. It became hugely popular; so much so that the letters KV were commonly used to describe the model range as a whole. The KV cab was replaced in 1966 by the LV (Long Vue), which had been introduced in 1962. This fictional image represents the much-missed Robson's Border Transport of Carlisle. A distinctive feature of Robson's fleet was the individual names beginning with the word 'Border'. This image is based on a preserved vehicle that carries the grey livery of Gestetner Duplicators (20-Jun-14).

To complete this short series of toy-inspired trucks, here is the logical companion to the Dinky Toys version. Like Meccano with its Dinky Toys brand, Mettoy took the opportunity to promote its Corgi Toys range with a selection branded models. Several variations of this blue and cream livery appeared on the Bedford CA van. In terms of the models, I can't vouch for the accuracy of either the vehicle type or livery, which has an uncanny resemblance to Wall's Ice Cream. This ERF is entirely fictional (22-Jun-14).

This image is inspired by the 1950s Dinky Toy Bedford Jetka Pallet Van, which was modelled on an actual vehicle In the company's fleet. Fitted with an early version of what is now termed a 'walking floor', it was used for moving pallets of materials between the Meccano factories in Liverpool. In model form, it was to become one of the most sought-after items in the Dinky Toys range. Whilst this clearly isn't a Bedford, hopeful it captures something of the appeal of the original (21-Jun-14).

Castrol motor oils and lubricants have been around almost as long as the motor car itself. Part of British Petroleum (BP) since 2000, its brand is instantly recognisable around the world, due (in part) to its sponsorship of Formula One racing. This fictional image depicts a Castrol delivery van of the 1960s. I can't be sure that the company operated ERF KVs with this style of body, but there is a very nice LV tanker preserved in Castrol livery. In terms of models, Dinky Toys made a Bedford TK, Lledo a Karrier Bantam (for a French partwork magazine) and Base Toys a Thames Trader - all with box van bodies in Castrol livery (21-Jun-14).
