Lima drew heavily on artistic licence when it offered its Midland 4F as a psuedu-Irish steam locomotive in 1977. The real 628 was a Coras Iompair Eireann J5 Class locomotive that had originated with the Midland Great Western Railway. There was some likeness in the model, although the running number would more likely have been yellow and CIE freight locos did not seem to carry the ‘flying snail’ logo. Whilst it is easy to dismiss models such as this, they were important in establishing and stimulating a market for ready-to-run models of Irish prototypes (08-Jun-22).

I'm no subject matter expert on Irish locomotives so this first offering of the iconic CIE A-Class (later 001) diesel locomotive is shared with some trepidation,. It carries the the early, short-lived silver livery and cab-side tablet catcher for single-line working. The location will no doubt be familiar to those with an interest in Irish traction. The source picture, which has been digitally backdated, was taken by my good friend David Little at Waterford in June 1978 (29-Nov-10).

This second rendition of the CIE 'A' Class diesel depicts A7 in the green livery that succeeded the poor wearing silver scheme. Despite their troublesome Crossley engines, the sixty Metropolitan Vickers 'A' Class diesel were probably the best of a bad bunch of British types bought by CIE in the late 1950s. After rebuilding with General Motors power units, several examples lasted into the mid 1990s, carrying successive versions of the black, tan (orange) and white livery.

Two of the class (A3 and A39) are preserved by the Irish Traction Group, another (A15) is preserved as a static exhibit on the West Clare Railway; whilst the shell of a fourth (A55) has been incorporated into the remarkable Hell's Kitchen Bar and Restaurant, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon (29-Nov-10).

Built between 1947 and 1948 for shunting use, particularly in the railway yards on Dublin's North Wall, the five D (later 301) Class locomotives were the first diesel locomotives used on the CIÉ network. Outwardly similar to British Railways Class 08, they were fitted with a 487 horsepower Mirrlees TLDT6 engine and electric transmission. Two locomotives were stored from 1960 and the rest had followed by 1972, but scrapping did not occur until 1977. This fictional sixth example - based on a BR Class 08 - supposes that similar locomotives (but with detail differences) were acquired when the assets of the former Great Northern Railway (Ireland) were divided between CIE and Northern Ireland Railways (06-May-22).

This fictional D-Class locomotive has previously been presented in CIE green livery. The rationale was that it was new to the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) and passed to CIE when the assets of that undertaking were divided between the two state-owned railways. In this version, it retains original GNR dark blue livery with added CIE ‘flying snail’ loco and running number. In reality, GNR acquired a single 800hp MaK diesel-hydraulic locomotive, which carried the same livery and later became CIE K Class locomotive number 801 (05-Aug-22).
