Stretching the definition of both ambulance and coach, this Bedford SB3 was, in fact, a very utilitarian bus fitted with double rear doors and removable racks for 16 stretchers. The Civil Aviation Authority (Avjazzjoni Civili) acquired two for use at Luqa airport from the British Forces when they withdrew from Malta in 1978. A number of similar vehicles passed to the Malta Police, Public Works Department and Dry Dock Company for use as conventional buses. The registration depicted may be incorrect for the Avjazzjoni Civili pair (08-Sep-15).

Unusual vehicles in the CIE fleet were four former E-Class Leyland Leopard buses converted to ambulance layout and painted overall white for the transfer of invalid pilgrims between Claremorris railway station and Knock Shrine. New in 1961, CZA 668 (fleet number E8) remained in the service bus fleet until 1975, when it was rebuilt with double rear doors and a revised internal layout for its new role. It was secured for preservation on withdrawal in 1992 and externally restored to original condition, but retaining ambulance layout and rear doors. Interior details may be incorrect in this digital representation (31-Mar-19).

This is a genuine image from the 1980s that has been digitally-restored, having deteriorated badly in the intervening years. It has been necessary to substitute a new background but everything else is as per the original but simply cleaned-up. I have no information about the subject but presume it to be some sort of casualty treatment unit rather than an ambulance control unit. The Bedford VAS and its bigger brother the SB were popular choices for specialist vehicles within the emergency services. Durham Fire Brigade had a control unit and a canteen van on Bedford SB chassis with similar Duple Vista-style bodywork (15-Mar-19).

The various divisions of St John Ambulance have used a variety of former buses and coaches as casualty treatment units at major events. Most recently, low-floor buses have been preferred for ease of access; but many high-floor coaches have been used in the past. This fictional Caetano-bodied Ford is loosely based on a Van Hool-bodied coach used by the Surrey Division (03-Dec-16).

Many ambulance services have a mobile control unit of some kind but I am not aware of any using full-size bus-derived vehicles. This fictional image is based on the previously published fire service versions. The livery is quite restrained by comparison with the accompanying Casualty Treatment Unit. The small checkers on the cantrail identify the vehicle as a control unit (26-Sep-14).
