Whereas Stephensons acquired former Middlesbrough Corporation buses and adopted that undertaking's blue livery, Lockey purchased Stockton Corporation buses and retained that operator's mid-green livery until adopting the famous black and ivory scheme at a much later date. Whether Lockey's buses had been green prior to the ex-Stockton acquisitions isn't clear.

Lockey actually purchased far more Stockton deckers than he could possibly operate - in the words of one former employee 'he fancied himself as something of a dealer', but most were ultimately broken-up on site. After the sale of Anderson's (Blue Bellle) business and Stephensons stage carriage licences to OK Motor Services, Lockey continued to operate the Evenwood route jointly with OK until finally selling out to the latter in 1982 - but that's another story.

This image is based on an East Pennine Transport Group black & white print - the photographer may have been Robert Mack. As usual, if there are any copyright issues I will remove the image or share my work with the copyright owner. The vehicle depicted was new to Stockton in 1937. Stephensons acquired it in 1951 and operated it until 1954 (sister CUP 251 lasted until 1958).

This is a real Stockton bus but the image is based on a later view with subsequent operator F Lockey & Sons of West Auckland. CUP 256 was new in 1937 as Stockton Corporation Transport No 249. Originally fitted with a Cravens body, it was rebodied as shown by Burlingham in 1945.

It was sold with similar CUP 251 to Lockey in 1951. Whereas nearby Stephenson Bros adopted Middlesbrough blue, Lockey may have adopted Stockton green or at least retained these two vehicles in that undertaking's green (earlier deckers appear to have been repainted in a brighter shade of green). CUP 256 was withdrawn in 1954, whereas CUP 251 lasted until 1958 (26-Feb-10).

The following interesting reminiscences were published in the Hamilton Advertiser in October 2008: "Chieftain Buses started in the early thirties running miners to Hamilton Palace Colliery. They operated in the 1950s and 1960s from a garage at Udston, moving later to premises in Burnbank. Central SMT took them over in 1961. Ronnie Niven travelled from home in East Kilbride to his school, the former Hamilton Academy, in the company’s buses. He recalls that the double deckers had a few miles on the clock and regularly laboured up the steeper hills between Hamilton and East Kilbride.

Like many small companies, they operated very few new buses, buying vehicles from here, there and everywhere. When he started travelling to school in Hamilton, they were using old Birmingham Corporation buses and, later, ex-London buses. He recalls being told that occasionally when the Chieftains were travelling between Hamilton and East Kilbride and they came to one of the steep hills into East Kilbride, the passengers often had to get off the bus to allow it to get up the hill”.

Whilst this fictional second-hand Foden appears to fit the profile very well, Chieftain's lasting claim to fame is as Scotland's first operator of the trend-setting rear-engined Leyland Atlantean (15-Sep-09).

This is the finished version of the image featured in the 'Techniques' set (link below). EFV 300 is a Leyland PD2/5 with a Burlingham centre-entrance body of a style unique to Blackpool. It was new to Blackpool Corporation transport as fleet number 300 in 1952. On withdrawal from normal service in 1969, it became Permanent Way bus 8 then 298 until final withdrawal and preservation in 1975. Since then it has led a nomadic life in a progressively declining condition. It made a rare appearance at the Centenary of Blackpool Transport events in 1985, where the source picture was taken. As well as the digital restoration explained in the Techniques feature, I have backdated its appearance by extending the areas of cream paintwork. It still needs appropriate legal lettering, if someone can advise? (19-Nov-12).

This image is a little rough (a consequence of the poor original) and there are plenty of views of the actual bus on Flickr, but I thought it worth including in my Blackpool and Fylde Buses & Trams set. I have already recounted the history of this particular bus under the related image (link below), suffice to say that it carried the green Permanent Way livery from 1969 to 1975 (19-Nov-12).
