Based on the same source image as the LNER version, this view shows the early overall carmine livery adopted by British Railways for its road vehicle fleet. The plain block 'British Railways' lettering would shortly be replaced by the familiar totem device. The nationalised company inherited a diverse collection of road vehicles from its constituent companies and continued to buy from multiple sources.

Where something more substantial than a 'mechanical horse' was required, Bedfords worked alongside Austins and Fordsons (and later Thames Traders) on general collection and delivery work. As with other nationalised concerns such as British Road Services, the fleet numbering system seemed complex to the uninitiated and I make no claims for accuracy in this respect (30-Nov-09).

Based on the same base image as the GWR version but with added load, this Thornycroft Sturdy carries the early British Railways all-over maroon livery with Gill Sans lettering in cream. Plain by comparison with the pre-nationalisation 'big four' liveries, it nevertheless presents a smart and workman-like appearance. The neatly-roped load was typical of the period (30-Dec-09).

This interesting vehicle appears to be a Harrington-bodied Abion horse box, but there was no information about either the subject or the source on the original monochrome print, which required a great deal of effort to bring it up to the standard you see. All the pre-nationalised railway companies operated fleets of horseboxes for transporting horses to and from rail heads and this practise was continued into the early years of British Railways, as immortalised by the Dinky Super Toys Maudsley Horsebox - now recreated on a smaller scale in the Corgi Trackside range (01-Oct-09).

Completing the series of railway-owned horseboxes, this fictional Leyland TS8 is based on a mirror image the United brush-bodied Thames-Tees-Tyne coach. Flipping the image neatly avoided the need to add a loading ramp on what was the off-side, but now appears as the nearside. Other modifications include the full-width can front, raised roof, modified side windows and squared-up rear profile (to cater for the usual rear loading ramp). As mentioned in the captions to the earlier images, British Railways and its predecessor operated a large fleet of horsebox, many of which were built on PSV chassis. (01-Oct-09)

A dropside version of this particular Dennis model appears in British Railways livery in the book 'British Railways Road Vehicles (Transpennine Publishing) and I've adapted the registration and lettering from that image on this digital representation. Its recent bus-building activities aside, Dennis is perhaps best known as builder of fire engines and there are hints of the contemporary F12 fire engine cab in the profile of this 1955 Pax lorry (02-Jul-10).
