The London & North Eastern Railway had committed to electrify the Manchester-Sheffield ‘Woodhead’ Route at 1500v dc and had completed prototype locomotive number 6000 before progress was halted by the Second World War. The project was ultimately completed by British Railways but, meanwhile, the prototype locomotive was loaned to the Dutch State Railways (NS) to help with a post-war loco shortage and, at the same time, to provide British engineers with valuable operational experience that could be incorporated into the subsequent production-series locomotives. After return to the UK, it was overhauled for use on its intended line and named Tommy in a ceremony at London’s Liverpool Street Station attended by NS officials. The digital-coloured image is based on a monochrome original taken at Maastricht, which is believed to be an NS official photograph and is has been used under the fair use provisions of copyright law (the copyright assertion on the image relates to the colour overlay and not the original image) (15-Nov-23).

The EM2 electrics locomotives (Later British Rail Class 77) were planned by the LNER for its Manchester-Sheffield-Wath electrification scheme, but the war intervened and construction did not commence until 1953 under British Railways ownership. The actual locomotives possibly bore little ressemblence to what had been planned by the LNER and there's more than a little artistic licence in this image. In reality the seven production locomotives emerged from Gorton works in a lined black livery, not unlike the wartime LNER scheme depicted here (27-Aug-11).

The EM2s were the first electric mainline passenger locomotives in the country. Planned by the LNER, construction did not take place until 1953 under the direction of British Railways. It is interesting to speculate what they would have looked like in LNER livery. This fictional rendition depicts the premier member of the class in the apple green livery that was re-introduced after the austere wartime black scheme depicted in the previous image (27-Aug-11).

The seven EM2 (later Class 77) 1500 volt DC electric locomotives were constructed by Metropolitan-Vickers between 1953 and 1954 for passenger services over the Woodhead Line between Manchester and Sheffield. Tri-ang was quick to add an example to its model range, although I have been unable to establish the exact year of introduction. Like the prototype locomotives, the model appeared in lined green, electric blue - with and without white lining and/or yellow warning panels - and rail blue liveries (15-Jul-22).

The EM2 (later Class 77) electric was a legacy of the LNER's pre-war scheme to electrify the East Coast main line using a 1500V DC overhead supply. War got in the way and, when British Railways dusted down the plans, DC traction was already on its way out in favour of a 25 KV AC supply. Only one main line scheme was completed to the old standard, the trans-pennine route from Manchester to Sheffield and Wath. Primarily a freight route, for which the Bo-Bo Class EM1 (later Class 76) was built, passenger services were handled by a seven-strong fleet of Co-Co Class EM2 (later Class 76) electric locomotives. The subsequent history of these locomotives is recounted under the BR corporate blue version. This image represents 27004 'Pluto' in a genuine (but possibly 'one-off') plain blue livery, as per an image found on the internet (15-Jul-11).
