Nice body, shame about the face - love it or hate it, the Class 70 is certainly different from anything else on British rails. Freightliner took delivery of 19 of these mammoth 3,686 hp American-built locomotives between 2009 and 2014; and Colas Rail Freight followed through with a batch of 17 between 2013 and 2017. All of the Freightliner batch carry the ‘Powerhaul’ livery with second-generation Freightliner logos; this fictional image depicts the earlier Freightliner green livery with first-generation graphics. None have yet received the orange and black livery of the company’s current owner Genesee & Wyoming – I’ve a digital representation of this and some other colourful liveries in the pipeline (28-Aug-22).

Network Rail has generally hired-in traction for infrastructure work and this arrangement has brought in useful revenue to companies like GB Railfreight, but the scale of the High Speed 2 project may see NR operate more of its own trains directly. This fictional Class 70 is numbered in a new 705xx series, indicating that it may be new-build, if that is still possible under current emission controls, rather than purchased or leased from existing users Freightliner or Colas (28-Nov-12).

It is now nine years since Freightliner Ltd was acquired by American short-line holding company Genesee & Wyoming and many Class 66s and 90s have been repainted in the new owner’s striking orange and black livery. Being relatively new, the Class 70s have not become due for a repaint but it can only be a matter of time. Meanwhile, here is my impression of 70005 in full G&W livery with Freightliner branding (08-Sep-23).

This fictional image supposes that some of Freightliner’s under-utilised Class 70 Powerhaul locomotives were transferred to fellow Genesee & Wyoming subsidiary Rotterdam Rail Feeding. As its name suggests, RRF has its origins in providing shunting services within the Port of Rotterdam but it also has a growing fleet of mainline locomotive for operations across mainland Europe (08-Sep-23).

GB Railfreight has achieved phenomenal growth since its creation as a start-up company in the wake of rail privatisation, so much so that it has eagerly bought-up surplus traction from rival companies. It is unlikely that Freightliner would part with any of its Class 70s, even if they do not appear to be fully utilised at present, so there is more than a little artistic licence here. The base image of Freightliner-liveried 70020 was taken at Oxenhope on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in June 2022 (19-Jan-24).
