The underfloor-engined AEC Regal IV was a successful and long-running export model but, like the contemporary Leyland Royal Tiger, it was quickly displaced in the home market by a lighter-weight sibling. Against this background it is perhaps surprising that London Transport not only standardised on it for virtually all its single-deck needs, but also kept it for so long. Introduced in the early 1950s, the last examples were not withdrawn until the late 1970s.

Some of the Green Line coaches had received a make-over, updating their appearance with features such as twin headlights, but the buses just soldiered on until replaced by Leyland Nationals or 'BL' Class Bristol LHs. This view of preserved RF503 has been given 'BL' style white window surrounds (but not carried around the back of the bus as on the BLs), and the cast roundel on the front panel has been replaced by a simple vinyl (13-Nov-10).

This fictional image is based on the three Albion Venturers with ECW-style bodies that Samuel Ledgard acquired from Red & White in 1961 and which were used predominately on the Harrogate-Otley-Bradford service. The Albions had been new in 1946 and were rebodied by Lydney in 1952 to a style resembling the contemporary ECW single-decker. This image depicts a standard ECW body (albeit rebuilt to front entrance layout by United Automobile Services) on a Bristol L chassis, looking very smart in Ledgard's blue and grey livery (10-Feb-13).

The RP-class AEC Reliances were intended for Green Line operations and were delivered new to London Country Bus Services in traditional Lincoln green livery with lime green waist band. They retained this livery until repainted NBC leaf green and white, skipping the intermediate mid-green and canary yellow scheme depicted here. JPA 190K (RP 90) was new in 1972 and, like other members of the class, spent various periods in store before disposal in 1981. After a brief period of further service with Smith’s of Reading, it entered preservation in 1983 and was subsequently repainted in its original Lincoln green livery (11-Oct-20).

This is one of the more unusual and challenging requests that I've received. Howard Piltz, who supplied the source image, wondered what one of Stagecoach's ex-Kenya Bus Dennis Dragons would look like in Manchester's streamlined livery. The livery is based loosely on the style applied to Manchester trolleybuses, with the requested traditional Manchester-style destination display. The Stagecoach logo is a subsequent addition and does not appear in the version supplied to Howard. (19-Nov-11).

Lincoln didn't operate AEC Renowns, but it was one of the few municipal operators to purchase its predecessor, the low-height Bridgemaster, albeit with rear entrance bodywork. An unusual and radically-different purchase for conservative Lincoln City Transport, it has been suggested that the four Bridgemasters were supplied from a cancelled Leicester City Transport order. Whilst they saw a full service life with Lincoln, they did not lead to further purchases of AEC products. This fictional image depicts former AEC Renown demonstrator 7552 MX which, in reality, was purchased by Burwell & District. Thanks to Jim Neale for the base image (24-Feb-16).
