There were a couple of Park Royal-cabbed AEC Mercury and Marshals on the Maltese islands in this orange and white livery. The colours suggest that the operator may have been Andrews Animal Feeds, but the lack of lettering prevents definite identification. This digital representation is not intended as an accurate rendition of any specific example, although an actual registration number has been used. Both models were more common in Malta as tippers and some of the three-axle Marshals were rebuilt to two-axle configuration for this purpose (20-Jan-19).

This is a variation of the previous image, using the later London Buses livery style with white band, yellow and white logo and the operating division above the driver's door. The logo incorporates the 'Supreme Travel' name, which also appears as the operating division together with a Valletta skyline graphic. 'London Northern' (one of the actual London divisions) would have been appropriate given the London and Northern connections, but the significance may have been lost on the average observer. The source image of FPT 588C (in Big Bus Company livery) was taken at St Thomas Bay on a private tour before the public service commenced in 2007 (updated 17-Mar-11).

United launched its open-top operation at Scarborough in 1980 with a hired batch of Southdown Leyland PD3s. For the following season it converted some of its own Series I Bristol VRs; but surprising repainted them in NBC leaf green bus livery, rather than the red and white dual-purpose livery appropriate to 'red' bus fleets.

This image shows the latter livery style on a former Northern General forward-entrance Routemaster converted to open-top layout. When Routemasters did arrive on Scarborough sea front many years later they were of the standard rear-entrance London type. The source inage is former Northern General FPT 588C photographed on Malta in 2007 (07-Jan-09).

I don’t usually do requests but this one from Howard Piltz came at the right time. The North Western Road Car Company remained loyal to the traditional, front-engined double-decker when others had moved on to rear-engined types. It famously operated AEC Renowns and Dennis Lolines because of the many low bridges in the company’s operating area, but perhaps there was scope for full-height double-deckers on other routes? The AEC Routemaster may have been a good choice, particularly in forward-entrance (RMF) configuration (27-Apr-23).

There was never a trolleybus version of the Routemaster, which was actually designed as a trolleybus replacement. That historical inconvenience aside, this fictional dual-door/ stairway trolleybus is based on the experimental Front-Entrance Routemaster (FRM). The open platform and rear staircase utilise the space occupied the latter's engine (the rear overhang has been slightly extended). Thanks to John Lidstone for the base image of FRM1 (25-Feb-12).
