In his book British Trucks at work in the Sixties, Peter Davies wrote: ‘WH Bowker of Blackburn boasts one of the finest fleets of long-distance trucks in the country. It once ran a mixture of Atkinson, Leyland, ERF and Guy rigids and was moving over to artics in the early sixties’. This is my interpretation of one of the Atkinson rigids, not based on any specific prototype (14-Aug-22).

Harvey’s of Bristol, the famous wine, port and sherry merchants, was the biggest user of Twin-Loads, operating two with curtainside bodies and two with frameless tank bodies. Both tankers were used for direct importation of wines from vineyards in Germany and France to Harvey’s bottling plant in Whitechurch. The company was particularly impressed by the high running speeds possible due to the stability of the design. This is a digitally-coloured version of an official Foden monochrome photograph from the collection of David Stanier kindly supplied by Peter Tullock. It was only after completing this image that I discovered that Foden’s Publicity Department had produced a hand-coloured version, albeit with an incorrect red TIR sign (01-May-22).

This version of the LAD-cabbed Leyland Octopus 'Powerplus' in the livery of Aaron Henshall of Prescot in Lancashire features the optional sun visor that was briefly popular at the time. The Road Haulage Association logos, which featured on many operators' trucks, add additional interest to the livery. Aaron Henshall operated mainly Atkinsons and Leylands and later sold out to Hold Lane Transport of the same town (17-Mar-18).

London Transport replaced its Thames Traders with Ford D-Series, which were again used in a variety of roles. This fictional three-axle D1000 represents a second-hand vehicle purchased primarily for driver training, but which would have been useful for larger loads normally carried on articulated units (29-Dec-19).

Established in Maidstone, Kent in 1861, Fremlin's Brewery focussed on bottled beer and became well-known for its distinctive elephant logo. The brewery expanded to become the largest in Kent, before going into decline after being purchased by Whitbread in 1967. The elephant logo can be seen on the front of this Bedford TK in a superb period photograph from the collection of Graham Newell. Fremlins delivery vehicles had originally been green; the brown livery depicted presumably being adopted after the Whitbread take-over (03-May-20).
