The only information that I have found for this operator sadly concerns its winding up in 2001. John Adams & Sons operated from a base in Linlithgow, Scotland with depots in London, Preston and Birmingham. I have no information about the final fleet, other than that the 25 tractive units and 50 trailers were reportedly operated on contract hire and all were returned to their suppliers. The company operated ERFs in the late 1980s (08-Aug-20).

This is a digitally-coloured version of a wonderful monochrome image from the collection of Graham Newell. It depicts - what I believe to be - an Albion Chieftain of Albion’s service fleet on a transfer run from Motor Panels of Coventry with seven LAD cabs plus a solitary cab for the Claymore CL, the latter dating the image between 1958 and 1965. It is interesting to note that the unit appears to be running on trade plates - a legitimate use of trade plates by a motor manufacturer, even under the current, more restrictive regulations (24-Nov-23).

Whilst underfloor engines had been firmly established in the bus and coach industry by the 1950s, very few truck manufactures have adopted the layout with any enthusiasm. One notable exception was German manufacturer Bussing, for which underfloor engines became it hallmark. In the UK, Albion Motors of Scotstoun, Glasgow identified a niche market in the brewery and removal sectors, where three-man crews were commonplace. Locating the engine under the load platform would leave the cab free of engine intrusions. It responded in 1954 with MR Claymore, which failed to make a profit for the company because of a poor reputation for reliability. This was replaced by the improved Claymore CL in 1958, which achieved modest sales over a seven-year production life. This fictional example is presented in the livery of Albion’s Service department. The polished metal rear body suggests that it may have been used as a demonstrator. I believe a similar vehicle but with a painted, wooden body is preserved in this livery (25-Nov-23).

Most of the larger bus companies included a few full-size trucks in their service fleets for the movement of spare parts and consumables between central stores and individual depots; and to enable the installation and the maintenance of infrastructure such as bus shelters. Walter Alexander & Sons had its own body-building division, with its own transport requirement. This wartime Bedford OWL is typical of the vehicle that may have been expected in the early post-war years. Thames Traders were used by Alexander & Sons at a later date (15-Nov-20).

The 6x2 ‘Chinese Six’ configuration was always something of rare bird, although it did enjoy brief periods of popularity, most notably on tractor units in the mid-1960s following changes to the Construction & Use legislation. On rigids, such as this Foden FG, it was believed to provide better weight distribution; although a counter-claim suggests that reversing manoeuvres could be more challenging. Alex Anderson of Bowness in West Lothian is well-known for its traditional livery and superb standard of presentation; and for its excellent selection of fleet preserved vehicles (07-Mar-20).
