Very few of these former NBC ECW-bodied Bristol RELHs saw further service with independent operators. Hulleys of Baslow in Derbyshire had two ex-Trent examples painted in this attractive variation of the company's usual blue and cream livery (the white presumably being carried over from the NBC scheme). YCH 896M was new as Trent Motor Services fleet number 157 in 1974, the final year in which this attractive but short-lived body style was produced (26-May-18).

YWM 89L (fleet number 89) was new to Southport Corporation in 1973, passing with that undertaking to Merseyside PTE in 1974. In 1988, it was aquired by Confidence Bus & Coach of Leicester with sister vehicle YWM 83L (fleet numbers 19 and 18 respectively). Both buses were sold for preservation in 2001. This digital representation retains the (incorrect) style of window vents from the base image, which was kindly provided by Keith McGillivray (22-Jan-23).

Like the original on which it is based, this is a ‘cut and shut’ job (but it is not exact representation of the original). Northern General Transport only rebuilt one of its Routemasters (accident-damaged RCN 685) to semi-forward-control for one-person-operation. The experiment was not a success, possibly because the perceived benefits had been negated by the improved reliability of rear-engined buses. Being a one-off in the NGT fleet, this bus saw little use before sale for scrap. It would have been an interesting addition to the fleet of Blue Triangle of Bootle had it lasted long enough (30-Apr-23).

This is the finished version of the image featured in the 'Techniques' set (link below). EFV 300 is a Leyland PD2/5 with a Burlingham centre-entrance body of a style unique to Blackpool. It was new to Blackpool Corporation transport as fleet number 300 in 1952. On withdrawal from normal service in 1969, it became Permanent Way bus 8 then 298 until final withdrawal and preservation in 1975. Since then it has led a nomadic life in a progressively declining condition. It made a rare appearance at the Centenary of Blackpool Transport events in 1985, where the source picture was taken. As well as the digital restoration explained in the Techniques feature, I have backdated its appearance by extending the areas of cream paintwork. It still needs appropriate legal lettering, if someone can advise? (19-Nov-12).

Bus-bodied Bedford OBs were quite rare in the Isle of Man Road Services fleet, although the company did operate a larger number of wartime 'utility' Bedford OWBs until the mid-sixties. Shane Conway's Classic Manx Buses website records Mulliner-bodied JMN 936 (fleet number 25) as new in 1948 and sold for scrap in 1965 - two years before the last of the utilities. A Duple bus-bodied OB followed in 1949 and a further Mulliner example in 1950 (which became a Railway parcels van).

The next new single-deckers were underfloor-engined Leylands but the company clearly had a use for small, normal-control buses suitable for one-person operation. The final OWBs were replaced in 1967 with a batch of former Aldershot & District Strachan-bodied Dennis Falcons, most of which lasted until 1975. One year later, the fleet merged with Douglas Corporation to form the Isle of Man Transport Company. Interestingly Douglas Corporation had replaced its Leyland Comets with normal-control Guy Otters, which lasted with the new company until 1970 (30-Nov-09).
