This is a crop from a larger image, which I’ve published separately. It was inspired by a striking photo on the cover of the book ‘British Rail in Colour 1968-1980’. A motion blur effect has been applied to the background to replicate the panning effect of the original view. This particular photoshop effect requires a side-on (or near side-on) view and works best where there are distinct background features such as trees (28-Aug-21).

This is an all-new version of an earlier image, which was inspired by the work of another Flickr user (link attached). None of Class 55s carried the large logo livery depicted and it is questionable whether this scheme would have done them any favours. This version features blue - rather than yellow - cab doors, providing a better balance between the two principal colours and also a larger logo with contra vision over the engine room window. Historically, this livery fits between the standard rail blue livery and the InterCity 'striped' style that would have suited the proportions of the body better (updated 20-Aug-21).

The eight-axle diesels that formed Classes 40, 44, 45 and 46 were legacies of the early days of dieselisation. Displaced from passenger duties by lighter and more powerful types such as the Class 47 and fixed-formation HST train sets, they had all gone by the advent of the large-logo liveries. The East Lancashire Railway has shown what might have been with its 40145; this fictional image extends the same treatment to Class 45. Had it happened in reality, it would almost certainly have been the swan song of this venerable locomotive class as there was simply insufficient work to warrant further retention (24-Sep-21).

I've been asked for more Westerns many times, but have struggled to find convincing liveries. This one just might have happened had they hung on as front-line passenger locomotives a little longer. Perhaps there was more chance of them surviving as freight locomotive had a greater proportion of freight stock been air-braked at the time. That said, here is Western Fusilier in the so-called 'large logo' passenger livery, although the size of the logo has been constrained by the body style. Note that the nameplate has been repositioned to facilitate application of the logo. The source picture was taken at the National Railway Museum, Shildon in 2009 (29-Apr-11).

By request, this is a rework of the plain blue Foster Yeoman version (now removed). Whilst essentially a freight locomotive, I believe this large logo blue livery had originally been proposed for the Class 58. Of course the Irish 071 Class, on which this image by Gordon Hawkins is based, was designed as a passenger locomotive, although it has latterly been confined to freight and permanent way work (02-Mar-12).
