In the later years of the National Bus Company era, Northern General painted its training fleet in NBC leaf green livery. In part this was to distinguish it from the passenger fleet (it had previously been yellow for the same reason, although the distinction in that case was lost in the Tyne & Wear PTE area). It was also a matter of convenience that the bulk of the training fleet comprised former Southdown Leyland PD3s, which were acquired in leaf green livery. Northern was, for a time, the largest operator of the distinctive full-fronted Southdown PD3s outside of their home territory. The fictional image supposes that Northern supplemented the Southdowns with examples of the similar Ribble MCW-bodied Leyland PD3 (14-Jan-12).
